Updating a bathroom doesn’t have to mean making it modern. This client sought an updated bathroom with traditional elegance. They also needed improved functionality and more storage space. A lot needed to be done for this traditional bathroom remodel in Houston.
Gut the Bathroom
We started with the easy problems – getting rid of the flowered wallpaper, framed glass, white cabinets, cultured marble counters, carpet, and other dated looks. With all of that gone, we were ready to update.
Work began in the shower and tub area. Having removed the framed glass, the shower space became expandable. We added an extended bench seat and a recessed shampoo niche before retiling the entire shower surround with Durango Natural porcelain tile imported from Italy. For added flare, we added a band of Picnic Basket Wicker linear mosaic glass accent tile across the shower walls.
New Bathroom Fixtures
That brought us to the fixtures. For the shower’s main valve and diverter valve trims, we used Delta Cassidy fixtures. The shower head was a Delta Cassidy Raincan shower head with curved shower arm. We also added a handheld unit and slidebar. This was a Delta Traditional handshower with H20Kinetic Technology, which would make showering easier for anybody using the new shower bench. All fixtures were finished in Champagne Bronze. We completed this part of the project by installing a frameless glass shower case.
The result was a far more comfortable and functional shower. The porcelain and glass accent tiles, combined with the frameless glass shower, updated the shower’s style with a warmer, classic feel matched with modern convenience.
New Tub Deck
Next up: the tub. We removed the awkward, angular tub, replacing it with a Kohler Serif drop-in oval basin. As with the shower, this increased the comfort of the bathing space. The tub’s round outer contours also created a prominent tub deck and backsplash. We covered this new space with the same Durango Natural tile as the shower. A new tub called for a new faucet, so we installed a new Delta Cassidy Roman tub faucet. We also fitted the tub with a with deck-mounted handshower finished in Champagne Bronze.
Custom Cut Vanity
Finally, the vanity area was the key to the bathroom. The countertops and cabinet faces provided another opportunity to update the style, while the wall space allowed us to add storage.
Based on the client’s needs, we set out to increase the bathroom’s available storage with custom-designed oak wood cabinets built in TriFection’s facility and finished with an Auburn Anigre stain. The vanity cabinets included expanded drawer space and a sitting area below the countertops. We then added tower cabinets on each end of the vanity. These cabinets were angled in for easier accessibility and elevated to preserve countertop space. We also installed a new headknocker cabinet above the toilet and another cabinet on the floor of the water closet. Now, our clients had more bathroom storage than they ever could have imagined.
We completed the vanity cabinets with Crema Bordeau granite countertops and Decolav Vitreous China oval vessel sinks in white. The new faucets were Delta Cassidy single handle with a Champagne Bronze finish. It was an eye-popping combination!
After retiling the bathroom floor with the Durango tile used in the shower and around the bath, we called our project complete. Best of all, we succeeded in updating while maintaining a feeling of traditional elegance–just what the client wanted.
